bar harbor food pantry

Produce was in abundance this summer and fall thanks to the efforts of a number of volunteers.  There were two sources of garden goods this season.  The first, was our plot in the COA community garden, maintained by certified master gardeners and those working toward certification through the UMaine Cooperative Extension Program. There were vegetables ranging from carrots and beets, to cauliflower and fresh garlic.  There were also plenty of greens, different varieties of lettuce, chard, kale etc...  Those using the pantry were especially grateful.  After picking up a bunch of freshly pulled carrots, one older lady smelled them with a big smile on her face and explained she used to garden each summer, but no longer had the mobility for that sort of activity anymore.  Pulling the carrots was always her favorite part of the harvest.  Thank you to all of the hard working gardeners who helped provide fresh veggies to our pantry.

The other produce donations came as a result of another program designed by the U-Maine Extention office, Plant-A-Row.  Community members were asked to plant a row in their personal gardens to donate to their local pantry each week.  Many different towns in Hancock County participated in this, and Bar Harbor had 4 volunteer gardeners who brought us beautiful things all season.  We received squash, potatoes, more varieties of greens and many other things.  Again, the bounty was appreciated by those who got to enjoy it.  Many thanks to all of you home gardeners for not only growing food for us, but harvesting and delivering right to our door!
